Don’t just do something. Sit there.
Sylvia Boorstein
Most mornings I open the doors and windows, as the gentle sea breeze floats in, carrying with it the sounds of the songbirds scurrying about in the trees and grass. As I sat with my breakfast today, a couple goldfinches adorned the rosemary bushes just outside my door. They love to munch on rosemary seeds, and the occasional leaves. My small but mighty herb garden attracts the birds every morning, but rarely do I stop to just watch. To listen. To be present.
Every day so much beauty unfolds around us. Life is a daily spectacle, but we tend to miss it, rushing from A to B, eyes on screens, minds anywhere but here. To take a moment and indulge in the surrounding sensorial experience almost feels out of reach, or worse, selfish. How could you waste precious time just sitting there, doing nothing?
I’m coming to learn that there are moments in life where taking that pause is actually the most important thing you can do. Not just for yourself, but for everyone who counts on you. At the retreat, there was a sign on the wall: Slow down. Breathe deeply. Tune in. Tuning in means being open. Aware. Remembering that the deepest form of doing, is simply being.
